If you have any stage of prostate cancer, you can use many tools and calculators to figure out how long you will have to live. Although understandable, this is a really silly game to play for a couple of reasons.
First, the statistics really aren’t accurate enough because there are so many variables. Second, if your result looks bad, it could be a negative self fulfilling prophecy. If you think you will die soon, your body will produce stress hormones that make you sicker and weaker. This is what happens to a lot of people with many cancers.
Think about how scared you got when the doctor told you the news. The cancer didn’t get worse at that moment, but your body was instantly flooded with stress hormones. This has a huge influence on your life expectancy. You can improve it with diet, exercise, surgery if necessary, attitude, and even chemo if necessary. Talk to the best doctor you can afford. Get different opinions. This is your life we’re talking about and how long it will be has a lot to do with how you handle yourself from this moment on. Forget about the calculator. It’s really not the right way to go. Others have beaten this disease, you can too.
